jamie nicolasPh.D. Student (2026 Cohort)

Jamie Nicolas (she/her) is a first-year PhD student and a Centennial Scholar. Broadly, her work considers how Black Studies and queer and feminist theory intersect with public health. She is particularly interested in researching the health care structures marginalized communities in the U.S. create in response to violence from the healthcare system.

Jamie earned her B.A. in American Studies from Yale University. There, as a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow, she researched how Black feminists engaged with the erotic in 1990s magazines to build community. Before Emory, Jamie spent a year teaching English to college students in Portugal on a Fulbright fellowship. Jamie’s experiences teaching and navigating academic spaces as a first-generation student have made her committed to producing accessible scholarship.
